Setting off, with the Julian (Caesar was here) Alps behind us
The hiking trails are well signed. "Walk of Peace" on the left, the "Julian Alps" to the right. They are coincident at this point.
Our intrepid hiking gang on the trail ahead. I stopped to notice the trail blaze
One of the many lovely waterfalls along the way.
One of the bunkers chiseled into the cliffs by the Austrians during WW1 to defend against Italian attacks
Fort Kluže, guarding a pass along the Soča (Isonso in Italian) River from the Ottoman Turks.
The Soča river flows through a narrow gorge just below the fort.
The cemeteries along the way present a grim reminder of the unfathomable number of young men who died here during the great war.
